Batik - Beautiful trees on tissue and fabric
Tutor: Jenny OLeary NEW TUTORCourse Code: 3325-04

Summary

Using Jenny's contemporary approach to this traditional technique of batik (hot wax resist) we will create pieces of work inspired by trees - the structure, leaves, shape, seasons. We will work on different surfaces - tissue, found papers and fabric. Working with wax, bleach and inks to create fabulous textures and effects, exploring markmaking with different tools. An exciting course allowing for exploration and discovery. The work will be suitable for further development such as adding stitch.

Description

On day one we will explore the use of different tools both traditional and non traditional to apply the hot wax to paper creating marks relevant to the theme – card, brushes, tjantings, cotton buds…
We will then use these marks to create more considered tree based designs on paper and tissue paper and use a bleach type solution and inks to create effects with colour and texture that will resist the wax…it’s quite magical!
On day two we will further develop what we’ve learned by working on fabric with the wax, more tools and inks. Although we will use the same tools and equipment the effects on the different surfaces are quite different and therefore exciting and fun to explore.
All of the work produced will be suitable for adding to at a later date with stitch or adding to with oil pastels, chalk pastels or acrylic paint or left as stand alone pieces.

Jenny OLeary NEW TUTOR

Jenny is a textile artist and tutor based in Shropshire. Her work is very much inspired by the landscape of Shropshire, it's colours, patterns textures and shapes. Rolling landscapes, clumps of trees perched on hills, ploughed fields and the changing of the seasons. Through her textile art she aims to bring out feelings about what is around her rather than being a true representation of any one place.
She works predominately in batik (hot wax resist) on tissue, paper and fabric, often combining it with machine and hand embroidery adding a drawn element to her work.
She has developed her own technique of batik on tissue over a number of years and is constantly exploring new ways of using the technique, collaging papers first to batik on to, creating batik papers to collage with, stitching on to completed batiks, applying tissue to canvas to batik on to, creating books from her batiked papers. Her workshops based on different themes inspire her to push her ideas further.
Jenny’s work has been published in WOWbook 5 as well as various textile magazines.
Jenny offers talks, courses and workshops in Shropshire and around the UK. She is a member of The Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft and The Batik Guild
